I would love it if George Takei would fucking publicly call out J.J. Abrams for the absolute fuckery that is casting Benedict Cumberbatch to play Khan Noonien Singh.
Because Mr. Takei has been such a strong vocal opponent of whitewashing
Because Mr. Takei himself was a pioneer and a role-model for Asian and POC actors in Hollywood
Because Mr. Takei is himself a Star Trek veteran and one of the most respected people in this franchise
Because Abrams and everyone involved in the Trek reboot loves George and took his opinion into account when it came to casting the last movie’s Sulu
Because Mr. Takei is fucking awesome and everyone loves him and because he’s hilarious and completely biting when he needs to be
I just want someone who actually has POWER and a VOICE and an AUDIENCE to shame the fuck out of the decision makers who made this horrible casting choice.
So, apparently Liam Hemsworth is being cast to play Ali Baba in “Arabian Nights.”
Expect a long rant because I am so angry that I have cried and screamed and I need to channel my anger into something productive. Like Tumblr.
But I think I really need to talk about why it is totally and completely wrong that a WHITE actor like Liam is cast as an obviously ethnic character.
When is this shit going to end?

Study: Black Children Are Less Likely To Get Pain Medication In ERs
The Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) revealed this past weekend that black children are dramatically less likely to receive pain medication in the emergency room than white children, according to ABC News.
Black children are 39 percent less likely to receive the same medicine as white children with similar problems. Since little is known about children’s pain expression and perception, the PAS is searching for a direct reason for the findings.
The study’s lead researcher, Dr. Tiffani J. Johnson, expressed her concerns about what she discovered.
“If we don’t recognize disparities, we’re never going to be able to close the gaps,” Johnson said.
“Now we need to look at where these differences are coming from. Are they at the patient level, the parent level or the physician level?”
The PAS also revealed that black and Hispanic children are likelier to have long ER visits than white children.
Researchers used data from the CDC’s National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, which included more than 2,000 children from 550 hospitals who visited the ER for abdominal pain between 2006 and 2009.
A 2002 Institute of Medicine study found large patterns of racial disparities in medical treatments, including that “minorities are less likely to be given appropriate cardiac medications or to undergo bypass surgery, and are less likely to receive kidney dialysis or transplants” as well as more likely to receive painful or life-altering procedures like limb amputation.
I can’t say I’m surprised by this, but it’s still fucking heartbreaking.

White People Who Fuss About Border Security
Just the other day, I ran across one of the guys from the high school group at my old church, and he was complaining about how unfair that the church can’t do casual mission trips across the border into Mexico like they used to because the Border Patrol won’t let Americans back into the country with just a driver’s license anymore.
Oh, shut the fuck up. Being waved through the border checkpoints with a cursory glance at your driver’s license was only ever a thing for white Americans. People of color always had to have full ID papers, and if you so much as looked kinda-sorta Hispanic you weren’t safe unless you had a passport and visa. His parents never noticed that when they were grousing about the “good old days” before 9/11, of course.
And it occurs to me that white privilege is so ingrained in the mindset of the middle class suburban white that they cannot comprehend being treated unkindly by the police on a systemic basis. Literally cannot comprehend it, even when it happens right in front of them. It’s always, “Geez, that cop was a total asshole to you.” No, he wasn’t. They’re all like that to people like me, and a hell of a lot worse to brown and black Americans.

it can be a progressive, healthy thing for white North Americans do to, to get back in touch with their ethnicity and their heritage…. to take pride in the specific cultural experiences that one should value.
And since “white” as a political identifier is the oppressive analogue to “people of color” — they are both socially constructed and both serve a political purpose — hell yes, let’s get white folk to take pride in something other than their whiteness.
(Also, its pretty much the funniest thing to talk to an actual Irish person about Irish-American fetishization of the Old Country. Ireland has experienced a huge surge in ethnic tourism — mostly North American Irish people trying to “find their roots”, and there are always those Americans who are shocked that the Irish are no longer dying of potato starvation. On the one hand, I sympathize, but on the other hand — I’m so used to white people fetishizing my culture, that I can’t help but think it a little funny when white people fetishize their own.)
And then there’s the…. darker side of ethnic identification. There’s something ugly that happens when a white person discovers their own heritage, and uses it to deny their own white privilege. Its disturbing when white people use their own ethnicity to try and make their own “struggles” equal to those of people of color. We see it happen here all the time.

Time is Up. Shit got Real.
My mom went up to my brother’s school and called all of those ignorant, neglectful, disrespectful teachers racists and read them like a Psalms verse on Easter Sunday.
Because it’s the 15th time she’s had to call a meeting with the Principal to complain about biased and racist comments they’ve been making to black students (including my younger brother) on a daily basis.
“You’re probably going to end up in jail.”
“You look like a little gang member.”
“Your mom wouldn’t even mind if I whooped you. Black kids like you need discipline.”
“You dress like a little thug. That’s going to get you killed.”
She straight up said, “I’m tired of being nice black mom, little miss courteous, little miss I’ll come sit at your stale ass fucking PTA meetings, but I’m really sick of fucking tired of you all thinking you can just say whatever you want to these kids, and you’ve definitely lost your fucking mind if you think you can’t talk like that to mine. You must need to take a quick nap right now since you’re fucking brain already went to sleep on you because you CLEARLY were not aware of how far you stepped out of bounds. You don’t get to run all over my child. You don’t get to break down his self-worth. You don’t get to break down his self-esteem. You don’t get to put a death sentence on his head. You don’t get to put him in Jail. What you gon’ do when it comes to me? You gon’ check your fucking self before you wreck yourself. If you’re not there to teach then you need to take your ass somewhere else and retire. How are you going to stand in front of the fucking classroom and not be accountable to those children? She said a lot more apparently as she called me and told me about how she knocked on each of these teachers doors one by one and told them off individually all morning.
It’s 11:08 am right now y’all.
You’d be surprised how much we really do have to fight for our babies. If you have a little brother, sister, cousin, niece, nephew, reach out to them. Be there for them. Mentor them. Tell them you love them. Tell them they’re beautiful. Tell them they’re black gold. Lift them up. Inspire them. Give them dreams to dream about.
Because they’re not safe in the streets. They’re not safe on the playground. And sadly enough, they’re not even safe in the classroom.
If we don’t step up y’all, we’re failing them, too. Shit just got real.
