A white college student from a private college goes into a poor neighborhood and volunteers four hours a week and that’s considered exemplary. [Whereas] a poor kid who lives in that community and takes care of all the kids in that neighborhood four hours every day is not seen as a volunteer.

This reminds me of something:

my mom briefly tried to volunteer with a group of suburban women from the JCC who were doing after-school tutoring in inner-city Hartford schools. The program was disbanded after a kid got stabbed in the hallways of one of these schools — the suburban ladies were concerned about their own safety. And what about the safety of the kids they were trying to help? Not one word about their welfare. 

White volunteerism, suburban volunteerism, its just a way for the privileged to feel good about themselves. 

Hats off to the community organizers and activists doing the real work.
